Lights, doors & noise: civilian defense fundamentals
Updated Sep 11, 2026v1.0.1Verified2 min read
Civilian defense in Halloween: The Game runs on three systems you already understand from being a person in a house at night: lights, doors, and noise. Michael's kit is built to exploit the dark, the open, and the oblivious — so the fundamentals are about denying all three, as a team, all night.
Lights: the power meter war
Light is mechanically hostile to Michael — it reduces Bloodthirst and restricts Shape Jump. That makes every switch a small weapon:
- Light rooms as you clear them; prioritize buildings holding Special Targets and your active escape route.
- When the map dims, respond. Michael cutting power is him casting a spell; someone should be dispelling it, not just noticing it.
- Fight — when you must fight — under lights. Lit-room brawls with numbers are where knockdowns and arrests happen.
Doors: buying minutes
Locked doors don't stop the Shape — darkness lets him jump straight past them — but a locked door in a lit house is different: with the jump restricted, he has to break in loudly.
- Lock behind you as you clear; every noisy entry is free intel.
- Don't seal your own exits. The goal is slowing him, never trapping you. Know two ways out of any room you plan to stay in.
- Barricade around defense points (target houses, escape staging) rather than everywhere — doors cost seconds, and the opening minutes have better uses. See the opening playbook.
Noise: the two-way channel
Noise works both directions and beginners misuse both:
- Your noise finds you. Sprinting through quiet houses and slamming interactions broadcasts your position to a Killer Sense-equipped hunter. Move calm when he's near; spend loud actions when he's provably elsewhere.
- His noise warns you. Breaking doors, NPC screams, a house going dark — the map narrates Michael constantly. A team that calls those cues in voice chat is never truly ambushed.
- Deliberate noise is a tool. Converging loudly on a teammate under attack turns his commit into a bad trade.
The house-clearing rhythm
Enter, listen, light. Two seconds of quiet at the threshold, then switches.
Sweep with the exit mapped. Loot and warn residents with your escape line held in your head.
Lock and move. Door locked behind you, next building — leaving lit, locked territory in your wake.
